Castle with its land base (cad. A 64, 65, 68-70, 76, 77): registration by order of 17 September 1999

Origin and history

The Château de Saint-Ferriol, located in the department of Aude in Occitanie, replaces a older building mentioned since 1155. The present building, built at the end of the 16th or early 17th century, consists of a rectangular main body on one floor, supplemented by two partially destroyed wings. Its original entrance, a full arched portal now hidden, was to the east. The castle is erected on a platform overlooking the village, with a fireplace dating from 1630 bearing the inscription "Noble Anne de Mauleon" and a shield representing a lion erected against a three tower castle.

The monument mainly illustrates 17th century architecture, although it underwent redevelopments at the end of the same century and from 1763 onwards. Listed as a historical monument in 1999 for its land base, it includes elements such as the main body and vestiges of the wings. Owned by a private company, its present state reflects these successive transformations, while preserving traces of its noble origin, such as the shield and the mention of 1630.

The Château de Saint-Ferriol is part of a regional context marked by a defensive and residential architecture, typical of the small seigneuries of Languedoc. At that time, the castles served both as residences for the local aristocracy and as symbols of power, while playing a role in the social and economic organization of the surrounding villages. Their dominant position, as here, often allowed control of land and communication axes.
