South-East dungeon to heavy; façades and roofs of the rest of the buildings (Box B 71): inscription by decree of 17 July 1990
Origin and history
The Château de Saint-Pierre-la-Noaille is a building located in the eponymous commune in the Loire department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Although its period of construction is not specified in the available sources, its south-east dungeon with heavy loads as well as the facades and roofs of other buildings were listed as Historical Monuments by order of 17 July 1990. This protection reflects its heritage importance, particularly for its distinctive defensive elements.
The castles of this region, often built between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, played a central role in the territorial and social organization. They served as both seigneurial residences, defence sites and symbols of power. In Saint-Pierre-la-Noaille, as elsewhere in Forez, these buildings were integrated into a network of fortifications controlling communication axes and agricultural lands. Their presence also reflected the political and military tensions that marked the history of the region, between the kingdoms of France and local influences.
Today, the castle of Saint-Pierre-la-Noaille, whose exact address is the 72 Chemin du Château, remains a testimony of this past. Although information on its accessibility (visits, rentals, accommodation) is not detailed in the sources, its conservation contributes to the development of the Loire's built heritage. The location of the monument, assessed as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), allows it to be located in a rural environment characteristic of the Forez.
