Origin and history
The castle of Salmaise, located in the municipality of the same name in Côte-d'Or (Burgogne-Franche-Comté), consists mainly of two distinct historical elements: a chapel dating from the 12th century and the remains of an old castle built in the 15th century. These remains illustrate the architectural and defensive evolution of the region between the Middle Ages and the end of this period, although the sources do not specify the exact functions of the site at those times.
The chapel, listed as a Historical Monument by order of 25 September 1928, represents one of the few 12th century religious testimonies preserved in the area. The remains of the castle, protected a month later (26 November 1922), suggest a seigneurial or military occupation, typical of the Burgundian fortifications of the late Middle Ages. The absence of detailed archival material in available sources limits knowledge of the precise uses of these structures or their sponsors.
The site, now located at 3 Rue du Château in Salmaise, enjoys a geographical location deemed "very satisfactory" (note 8/10), allowing a clear identification on the ground. Available photographs, such as those of Siren-Com under Creative Commons license, show characteristic architectural elements, but no source describes their current state or accessibility to the public. The Mérimée data confirm its administrative address and its Insee code (21580), attached to the district of Dijon.
