Origin and history
The Château de Sampigny, located in Place du Pibout in Gerzat in the Puy-de-Dôme, is an emblematic building of the 17th and 18th centuries. Built in 1668 for Pierre de Vernaison, then receiver of the records of Riom, it illustrates the civil architecture of this period, marked by corner turrets, skylights and an imposing roof. The body of main house, of square plan, is extended to the eighteenth century by a more sober wing, reflecting the evolution of architectural tastes.
In 1732, the castle passed by marriage to Gabriel-François de Sampigny d'Issoncourt, Marquis d'Effiat, marking a transition in his seigneurial history. The set also includes a typical Auvergne common wing, as well as a park with a quadrilobed basin and a water body. The estate has been protected since 1976, with an inscription covering the facades, roofs, the wrought iron grid and the basin, showing its heritage value.
Sampigny Castle embodies the legacy of local elites, combining residential functions and power symbols. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments underlines its importance in the architectural landscape of the Auvergne, between late medieval heritage and classical influences. The accuracy of its location (place du Pibout) and its state of conservation make it a remarkable site for the study of noble regional homes.
