Origin and history
The castle of Saveilles, located in Paizay-Nadouin in the north of the Charente, combines the characteristics of a castle and a Renaissance residence. Its history began in the 15th century, but it was in 1508 that Jacques de La Rochefaton obtained permission to build a fortress on his lands, with 9,000 gold ecus paid to his duzerain of Ruffec. This right includes high, medium and low justice, consolidating its local power.
In the 16th century, the La Rochefaton family adopted Protestant religion, transforming Saveilles into a Calvinist bastion. The Touchimberts, their successors, even set up a Huguenot temple. In 1685, they submitted complaints to Louis XIV on behalf of the Reformed, illustrating the religious and political commitment of the field. The castle remains a symbol of Protestant resistance until the revocation of the edict of Nantes.
The architecture of the castle evolved significantly in the 19th century under the impetus of new owners. The south wing, rebuilt in neo-classical style, contrasts with the original medieval structure, marked by moats, a pentu roofed square and two round towers with peppers. The Bourdeilles, Disnematin de Salles, Ligondés and Mas Latrie families succeeded each other as owners, preserving this Charentais heritage.
The feudal origins of Saveilles date back to the 14th century with the Barrière family, lords of the place. Marguerite de Chasteigner, wife of Pierre Barrière, passed the estate on to their descendant Jeanne, who brought him in dowry to Jean de Montalembert. These noble alliances underline the strategic and social importance of the fief, long before its transformation into a fortified castle under the Rochefatons.
Today, Saveilles Castle embodies almost seven centuries of history, from Renaissance religious conflicts to 19th century renovations. Its square plan, moats and defensive elements recall its past role, while its neo-classical additions reflect the more recent architectural tastes. Ranked among the remarkable castles of Charente, there remains a living witness to the regional heritage.
