Origin and history

The castle of Semur-en-Auxois is a historical monument classified since 1862, bearing witness to 13th century military architecture. Located in the city of Semur-en-Auxois, it embodies the strategic importance of this Burgundy region during the Middle Ages, especially to control commercial and military routes.

The town of Semur-en-Auxois, where the castle stands, historically belonged to the former province of Burgundy. Over the centuries, it has been integrated into the Côte-d'Or department, created in 1790 by the Constituent Assembly. This department, whose prefecture is Dijon, underwent several administrative reorganizations, including the abolition of the Semur-en-Auxois district in 1926, in favour of Montbard.

The castle, owned by the commune, is a vestige of medieval fortifications that structured the local power. Its ranking among Historic Monuments underscores its heritage value, both for its architecture and for its role in regional history. The Burgundy-Franche-Comté region, rich in heritage, has many other comparable buildings, such as the castles of Bussy-Rabutin or Châteauneuf, reflecting a time when local lords played a central role in the territorial and social organization.

Semur-en-Auxois, a preserved medieval city, also preserves a collegiate Notre-Dame and a municipal museum, strengthening its historical appeal. The castle thus forms part of a coherent urban complex, illustrating the life and challenges of a fortified city in the Middle Ages, between protection, commerce and seigneurial power.

The Côte d'Or, a department with a poetic name inspired by its vineyards, offers a varied geographical setting, between plateaus, valleys and forests. The castle of Semur-en-Auxois, by its central location in the Auxois, participates in the presentation of this Burgundy heritage, now oriented towards cultural tourism and the preservation of its history.
