Origin and history

The Château de Sénergues is a medieval building located in the village of Sénergues, Aveyron, Occitanie region. Its construction dates back to the 11th century for the dungeon and the 12th century for the rest of the structure. The present building is incomplete: one part was destroyed by order of Cardinal Richelieu, while another was burned during the French Revolution. These events have profoundly altered its original architecture, leaving only partial remains, including the facades and roofs protected since 1979.

The castle is listed as historical monuments by order of 15 January 1979, covering specifically its facades and roofs. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum base, confirm its heritage importance in the Aveyron department. Although partially destroyed, it bears witness to the defensive architecture of the Central Middle Ages and to the transformations over the centuries, particularly under the influence of political and religious conflicts.

Today, the castle of Sénergues remains a symbol of local heritage, linked to the history of Rouergue and Midi-Pyrénées (now Occitanie). Its 11th century dungeon and the remains of the 12th century offer an overview of medieval construction techniques, while recalling the upheavals in the region, from the wars of Religion to the Revolution. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory (level 7/10), and photographs licensed under Creative Commons document its current state.
