Origin and history
The castle of Sermezy, located in Charentay in the Rhone, was built in 1776 as a recreational residence. Its main body, typical of 18th-century local architecture, is complemented by two arcade pavilions and an English park. These elements reflect the taste of the era for elegant houses and picturesque landscapes, characteristic of the aristocratic or bourgeois properties of the region.
Between 1927 and 1929, architect Augustin Chaumel led important works to modernize the castle, incorporating contemporary amenities such as sanitary and electrical comfort. This renovation is accompanied by a redesign of interior decorations, combining various styles: Louis XV, Restoration, Art Deco and neo-Gothic. The English-language park was then remodeled in a French-style garden, illustrating an evolution of aesthetic tastes at the beginning of the 20th century.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 25 October 1988, the castle protects its facades, roofs, as well as several interior rooms (large living room, billiard room, library, one bedroom). These elements bear witness to its architectural and decorative history, from its construction to subsequent transformations. Today, the castle belongs to an association, ensuring its preservation and heritage value.
