Origin and history

The castle of Soussey-sur-Brionne is a 13th century castle, partially classified with historical monuments, located in the commune of Soussey-sur-Brionne in Côte-d'Or, Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. It is located in Auxois, about 100 meters south of the church of the village, on a rectangular platform slightly raised, surrounded to the west by a dry ditch and to the north by a lifting, possible vestige of the old courtyard. The 13th century square dungeon is the oldest part of the castle, while the other Gothic and Renaissance buildings were added in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The castle was owned by the Pracomtal family from the 16th century, after their union with the Barony of Soussey. In 1611 Laurent de Pracomtal, Baron de Soussey, married Anne de Bourbon-Busset, whose niece, Jeanne de Razout, married Jean-Louis Nauret, tax attorney of the baronie in 1648. The latter's house, still visible near the church, bears witness to this story. The castle retains remarkable elements such as a round fireplace, 17th century murals, and a 14th century dovecote with 2,400 bolts.

The architecture of the castle includes a tower of 25 meters high, a Renaissance door with carved pediment, sled windows, and a neo-Gothic tower built at the end of the 19th century. The estate also includes a French garden and a park crossed by the Brionne River. Since the 1980s, the castle has been renovated by its current owners, who organize guided tours and reconstruct seigneurial life in certain rooms of the dungeon.
