Origin and history
The castle of Theyrargues, located in the commune of Rivières en Occitanie, finds its origins in the fourteenth century. At the time, it served as a defensive fortress to protect the western border of Avignon and Comtat Venaissin. Its initial structure, a quadrilateral with four house bodies and four round towers, reflected its military role. Today, only the west wing, framed by two round towers dated from the 14th century, remains of this period, of which one (south tower) was built at the end of this century and the other (north tower) at the beginning.
Over the centuries, the castle underwent several transformations, notably after a fire during the French Revolution, which partially destroyed the main body. Restored in 1801, it was adapted as a recreational residence, gradually losing its original defensive features. The current crenelages, added between 1900 and 1914, as well as the terrace overlooking the southern facade, testify to these architectural changes. East wing, which once closed the central court, disappeared on an indeterminate date.
Partially classified as historical monuments since 19 April 1974 (for facades and cover of the East Tower), Theyrargues Castle remains a private property, still owned by the same family. Its history illustrates the evolution of castles in aristocratic residences, typical of many medieval fortifications in Occitanie. The preserved elements, such as the round towers and remains of the West Home Corps, provide an overview of its military past and subsequent adaptations.
