Origin and history

Trélon Castle, located in the northern department, is a building whose history dates back to at least the eleventh century, when the village belonged to the Avesnes family. The original castle, built by Nicolas d'Avesnes, has suffered numerous sieges and destruction over the centuries, reflecting the conflicts that have marked the region. Several times, notably in 1478 by Jean de Luxembourg, in 1543 by François I, then in 1637 by Turenne and in 1651 by General Rose, the castle was successively under French, Burgundy and Spanish domination. These events have profoundly affected the local population, facing looting, famine and epidemics such as plague.

The present castle, rebuilt in the 18th and 19th centuries, was included in the inventory of historical monuments in 1986. Today it belongs to the house of Merode, a noble family whose influence extends over centuries. The facades and roofs of the castle, protected by decree of 9 December 1986, testify to its architectural and historical importance. Although the castle has had a turbulent history, it remains a symbol of local and regional heritage, open to contemporary uses such as visiting or accommodation.

The Château de Trélon is located in Place de la Piquerie, in a setting that has been assessed as having a satisfactory location (note 8/10). Today it is the property of a private company, which makes it a historic and dynamic place, integrated into the present life of the municipality. Its history reflects the political and military upheavals that have passed through the Hauts-de-France region, while at the same time embodying the resilience of local communities to these challenges.
