Origin and history
Trigonant Castle is a historic monument located in the commune of Antonne-et-Trigonant in the Dordogne department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine). Built on the edge of the 15th and 16th centuries, it replaces an ancient noble den dependent on the chestnutry of Auberoche. The house, facing north-east-south-west, is protected by mâchicoulis and four towers, including two rounds overlooking the Isle Valley, a square dungeon, a stairway tower and a corbelled turret. Its architecture reflects a defence concern, as evidenced by the murderers of the round path.
The castle was listed as historical monuments on 12 October 1948. Private property, it stands out for its small windows, replacing old sledges. Its strategic location, on the edge of the national road 21 and near the village of Antonne, highlights its historical importance in the region. The sources also mention its defensive role, typical of the manors of this pivotal period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Today, Trigonant Castle remains a remarkable example of the fortified civil architecture of the late Middle Ages in Périgord. Its state of conservation and heritage protection make it a key witness to local history, although its access as private property is restricted. Available data are mainly from the Merimée, Wikipedia and Monumentum databases, confirming its status as an emblematic monument of the Dordogne.
