Origin and history

The Château de Vayres, located in the commune of Saint-Georges-lès-Baillargeaux (Department of Vienna, New Aquitaine region), has its origins in the 14th century. Originally built in 1392 – two towers surrounding the house – it was rebuilt in the 16th century, then restored and embellished in the 17th century. These transformations reflect the architectural evolutions and defensive needs of each era, while integrating elements of comfort and decoration characteristic of the Renaissance and classical periods.

In 1656, a dovecote (or fled) was erected on the estate, demonstrating the economic and symbolic importance of this type of construction in seigneurial properties. The castle, partially registered with the Historical Monuments since 1959 (façades and roofs), saw its gardens protected in 1966 and its escape classified in 1994. These successive rankings highlight the heritage value of the ensemble, combining architecture, history and landscape.

In the 20th century, the castle changed hands and was acquired in the 1930s by photographer François Kollar. The latter lived there with his family during World War II, marking a more recent period in his history. Today, the estate belongs to a private society and retains traces of its multiple lives, from medieval origins to its contemporary uses.

The legal protections cover not only the home and its dependencies (poternes, commons), but also the gardens and its escape, illustrating the diversity of the heritage elements preserved. The exact address, 2 Route du Château de Vayres, and its Insee code (86222) firmly anchor this monument in the territory of Vienna, between Poitiers and the landscapes of Poitou-Charentes.
