Origin and history

The Château de Védrines is a former fortified house built in the late Middle Ages in the commune of Lorlanges, Haute-Loire. The building, originally erected as a defensive building, has undergone major changes over the centuries, including a campaign of enlargement and decoration at the end of the 19th century. This work added a square dungeon, a semi-outbuilding tower, as well as the bedside of a chapel, while integrating interior decorative elements of neo-Gothic style, particularly visible in the dining room and chapel.

The ceilings on the floor, decorated with chamois painted by Italian artists, illustrate rural scenes and testify to the artistic refinement of the period. The castle, probably built in the 16th century, was rebuilt around 1652, then completely re-dressed around 1880 by the family of Roquefeuil, whose coats of arms (including cords) adorn the chimneys, gutters and the front of the door. The commons and outbuildings, dating back to some of the eighteenth century, complete this varied architectural ensemble.

The Château de Védrines has been listed as historical monuments since 9 April 2001. This protection covers the entire building, including its interior decorations (dining room, living room, library, chapel) and the rooms on the first floor, with their woodwork, fireplaces and painted ceilings. The dovecote, probably dating from the 16th century, as well as the dependencies of the 18th and 19th centuries, contribute to the heritage richness of the site.

The precise location of the castle is indicated as 2 Angelane, in Lorlanges, in the department of Haute-Loire. This monument thus reflects centuries of architectural history, mixing medieval heritage, Renaissance embellishments and eclectic transformations of the nineteenth century, typical of the aristocratic residences of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
