Origin and history

The castle of Verchin, classified as a Historical Monument, consists of buildings built at different times: a house of the 3rd quarter of the 17th century, a castle of classical style from the mid 18th century, and a wing added in 1854 by architect Clovis Normand. An additional wing was built in 1953. The estate includes a chapel, a greenhouse, a walled vegetable garden, as well as an English-language park in 1869, with a piece of water, an island and a waterfall used as a weir at the Lys. A dam system was installed to avoid siltation, while vegetation, composed of remarkable trees and massifs, earned the garden the price of the Old French Houses.

The architecture of the castle reflects a marked stylistic evolution, moving from a 17th century home to a sober classicism in the 18th century, then to romantic additions in the 19th century. The park, designed to harmonize art and nature, illustrates the influence of English landscape gardens in France. Its hydraulic system, combining utility (Lys regulation) and aesthetics (cascade, island), demonstrates a technical mastery and a desire to create a picturesque landscape. The elements protected by the 2010 decree include the facades, the chapel, the park with its hydraulic network, and the vegetable garden with its outbuildings.

The castle of Verchin is part of a territory marked by the river history of the Lys, a valley suitable for the establishment of seigneurial residences then bourgeois. Its park, with its rare essences and aquatic facilities, makes it a representative example of the aristocratic domains transformed in the 18th and 19th centuries, combining architectural heritage and landscape innovation. The recognition by the Vieilles Maisons Françaises underlines the quality of its preservation and maintenance, while highlighting its role in the regional heritage of Hauts-de-France.
