Origin and history

The castle of Verges, located south of the village in the Jura, was rebuilt from 1562 by Philibert de Vautravers, captain of the Val de Voiteur, and his wife. The L-shaped building, with two winged towers, retains a military appearance marked by gunboats, while integrating interior decorations from the 18th and 19th centuries. It initially depended on the Barony of Binans and replaced an earlier castle.

A victim of a fire in 1746, the castle was partially restored and later renovated in the early 19th century by Pierre-Claude Chaillet de Grandfontaine. Parts classified in 1992 include lava facades, five towers with stairs, a vaulted room and an oratory. A 2015 Order extended the protection to the entire estate, including the park and enclosure walls.

The monument passed into the hands of several families (Montrichard, Saint-Mauris, Aubarède) before being acquired in 1727 by the Chaillet brothers, lawyers in parliament. Recent excavations, such as the discovery of a rugged tower in 2004, have led to an expansion of its heritage protection. Today, it bears witness to architectural transformations over centuries, combining defense and seigneurial residence.
