Origin and history

Veyrignac Castle, located in the eponymous village of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, has its origins in the 15th century, as evidenced by two round towers still visible in its courtyard. These medieval remains suggest the existence of a first fortified building, typical of the seigneurial constructions of the period in Périgord, an area marked by the conflicts of the Hundred Years War and the need to protect local populations.

The major reconstruction of the castle took place during the second half of the 18th century, according to plans attributed to architect Germain Soufflot, famous for his work on the Basilica Sainte-Geneviève (Panthéon) in Paris. Although the original plans have been modified, especially for the facade overlooking the river, the building adopts a rigorous classical style: a single storey, mansard housing body, a rounded entrance door framed with pilasters, and two forward pavilions. The ground floor, entirely arched, reflects the constructive techniques of the time.

The castle suffered a devastating fire during the Second World War, caused by German troops. This event marks a turning point in its history, leading to partial destructions whose traces remain visible today. Despite this, the monument retains much of its original structure, including its outbuildings and terrace walls, protected by an inscription to the Historical Monuments in 2013.

Today, Veyrignac Castle is a private property, managed by a company. Its state of conservation, considered very satisfactory (note 8/10), and its precise location (69 A Le Château, 24370 Veyrignac) make it a major architectural testimony of the Black Perigord, between medieval heritage and classicism of the Enlightenment. The protected elements include not only the entire castle, but also the ground of its plots and terrace walls, highlighting its heritage importance.
