Origin and history
The Château de Vieillevigne, located in the municipality of the same name in Haute-Garonne (Occitanie), finds its origins in the sixteenth century, the period of its initial construction. The building, characteristic of the seigneurial houses of the Renaissance, was profoundly transformed in the 17th and 18th centuries, with interior expansions and redevelopments. These modifications included a large 17th century staircase and decorative elements from the 18th century, reflecting the evolution of aristocratic tastes throughout the centuries.
In the fourth quarter of the 19th century, the castle was equipped with a landscaped park, typical of the romantic arrangements of the period, which now surrounds the central house body. The latter is flanked north of two circular towers and south of two square pavilions surrounding a terrace, while low commons delimit a courtyard. Originally closed by a fourth building (disappeared before 1824), this provision illustrates the spatial organization of noble estates, combining residential function and architectural prestige.
Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 23 August 2001, the castle is fully protected, including its 18th century garden staircase and a slope planted with parasol pines. These elements highlight the heritage value of the site, a witness to architectural and landscape transformations over nearly five centuries.
