Origin and history
The Villeneuve estate, located in Bar-sur-Seine in the Aube department (Great East region), is a former mansion built in 1874. It was built by the Boulard family, owner and operator of the stationery of Villeneuve for two centuries. This estate illustrates the Italianist architecture of the second half of the 19th century, typical of bourgeois residences linked to local industry. The house consists of a master house, a dovecote (registered with the Historical Monuments), a greenhouse and a barn, reflecting the social and economic status of its owners.
The dovecote of the estate was registered as historical monuments by order of 29 July 1994, thus recognizing its heritage value. The site is closely linked to the industrial history of the region, notably through the stationery of Villeneuve, operated by the Boulard family since the 17th century. Today, the estate remains a private property, bearing witness to the industrial and architectural past of Bar-sur-Seine, close to the confluence of the Seine and the Ource.
The estate is part of a regional context marked by the rise of stationery in the 19th century, a major activity in Champagne-Ardenne. These bourgeois residences, often built near production sites, symbolized the economic power of industrial families. The Château de Villeneuve, with its italianist style, embodies this period of prosperity and innovation, while preserving functional elements such as the pigeon-house, typical of the rural estates of the period.
