Origin and history

Villers-le-Château Castle is an emblematic building located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Marne, in the Grand Est region. This castle stands out as a precious building of the 16th century, a period marked by the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, where architecture is more decorated and symbolizes the power of local elites. Its state of conservation makes it a rare testimony of this pivotal era.

Listed as historical monuments since 1986, the Château de Villers owes this protection to its 17th and 19th century parts. These later additions reflect architectural developments and the needs of successive owners, integrating classical and neoclassical elements. The official inscription emphasizes its heritage value, while preserving the traces of the different periods that shaped its history.

In the 16th century, the castles of this region often served as residences for the nobility or the rising bourgeoisie, while playing a role in the local economic organization, as a centre for managing agricultural land. Their presence also strengthened the networks of power and influence in a France in full centralization under the royal authority. These monuments represented both a social status and a practical function, between defence, habitat and representation.
