Origin and history

The Château de Villiers-le-Mahieu, located in the same name as the Yvelines, is a building dating back to the thirteenth century. According to legend, it was built by the English in the Middle Ages. The moats surrounding the castle date from this medieval period, testifying to its initial defensive role. The site thus preserves remains of that time, though deeply transformed later.

In the 17th century, the castle was completely renovated in Renaissance style by the Marquis Claude d'Attilly in 1642. The latter erected the current structure on the foundations of the medieval building. The facades, the roofs, as well as the moat and the floor of the courtyard were preserved, as were a planted axial driveway leading to the castle. The park, organized according to a star route, completes this remarkable architectural ensemble.

In 1964, the castle was classified as a historical monument by the French Ministry of Culture, recognizing its heritage value. The following year, in 1965, Count Rohan Chabot undertook a major restoration of the site. Between 1971 and 1979, the castle became the residence of the expressionist painter Bernard Buffet, adding an artistic dimension to his history. Finally, in 1980, Jean-Luc Chaufour set up a luxury hotel, opening the monument to a new tourist and hospital vocation.

Today, the Château de Villiers-le-Mahieu combines historical heritage and modernity. Its protected features include facades, roofs, moat, courtyard, axial driveway and park. The site remains an emblematic example of the transformation of castles into aristocratic residences, then places dedicated to hospitality and culture.
