Origin and history

Château de Villiers-Saint-Denis is a historic monument located in the commune of the same name, in the department of Aisne, in the Hauts-de-France region. Originally built on the site of a medieval castle with only a few remains in the cellars, the present building dates mainly from the eighteenth century. This site, marked by a major reconstruction, bears witness to an ancient occupation, although the material traces of the Middle Ages are today very limited.

The property belonged to Émilien de Nieuwerkerke, an influential figure of the 19th century, director of museums in France in 1849 and then superintendent of Fine Arts from 1863. Near Emperor Napoleon III, Nieuwerkerke marked the history of the place by its social and political status. In the 20th century, the castle and its 42-hectare park were converted into a sanatorium in 1930, before becoming a hospital run by the Health Renaissance Foundation.

The castle was listed as historic monuments in 2007, recognizing its heritage value. Dr. André Bocquet, former medical director of the medical-surgical centre installed on site, recorded the history of the site in a dedicated book. This document, although concise (48 pages), sheds light on the transformations of the castle, from its aristocratic residential function to its current role in the medical field.
