Origin and history

The Château de Vougy is a 17th century building built between 1736 and 1748 from a former fortified house by Jean-Marie Michon de la Farge, the king's squire. It is distinguished by its classic facades and landscaped park, including aisles, water and groves. Ranked a historic monument in 1980, it embodies the architecture and art of the gardens of the Louis XV period.

The castle underwent a major restoration at the end of the 19th century under the impulse of Count Michon de Vougy, preserving its original environment. He belonged to a line of soldiers and nobles, including Jean-Louis Michon, made seigneur of Vougy by Louis XV, and Jean-Étienne, last count, deputy and mayor of Vougy for 50 years. The property is now shared between the Chodron de Courcel and Garnier des Garets families.

Inside, the castle houses remarkable rooms such as the vestibule decorated with an equestrian portrait of Henry IV and an ancient sarcophagus, or the tapestries salon, typical of the 1880s. The left wing includes outbuildings (orangerie, stables, cellars), while the historical protection also covers ditches, the court of honour and the park.

Located north of Vougy, on the road to Pouilly-sous-Charlieu, the castle illustrates the architectural and landscape heritage of the region. Its history reflects the social ascent of the Michon de la Farge, marked by their military service and their integration into the nobility under the Old Regime.
