Origin and history
The Château des Barthon de Montbas is an iconic monument to the city of Bellac, located in the Haute-Vienne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Built in the 17th century, it is distinguished by its L-shaped architecture, embellished with dauchuettes at the corners of the building. Originally built outside the medieval enclosure, in the Saint-Michel-outside-les-Murs district, it marked the transition between the fortified town and its suburbs.
In the 18th century, the castle was associated with the Barthon de Montbas family, of which Louis Barthon de Montbas was the first elected mayor of Bellac, replacing the consul system. This change reflected the political and administrative developments of the time, with more centralized local governance. Today, the castle houses municipal services, demonstrating its adaptation to contemporary needs while maintaining its historical heritage.
The location of the castle, at the gates of the old closed city, highlights its role in the urbanization of Bellac. In modern times, peri-urban castles like this often served as residences for influential families, while playing a role in local management. Their architecture, combining symbolic defences (scauguuettes) and comfort, illustrates the transition between the Middle Ages and the classical era, where fortifications lose their military utility in favor of a residential and prestigious function.
