Origin and history

The Château des Bordes, located in Urzy in Nièvre, is a building whose origins date back to the 15th century, with major changes in the 17th century. It was rebuilt in 1486 by Philibert de La Platière, seigneur des Bordes, to defend the village and agricultural lands of the Nièvre valley. This castle, vassal of the bishops of Nevers, played a strategic role in the region, reflecting the power of the local noble families linked to the French and Polish crown.

In the 17th century, the castle reached its peak before gradually being abandoned in the 18th century. The north-west wing has now disappeared, but the main house body retains remarkable elements: a stone staircase, carved chimneys, and wall paintings dating from the late seventeenth century, probably made under Marie-Louise de la Grange d'Arquian, Marquise de Béthune. The estate also includes a 17th century portal, commons, a bread oven and terraces, testifying to its past importance.

The Château des Bordes has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1946 for its facades, roofs, and interior elements, and a second time in 1998 for its outbuildings and decorations. It is now partially open to the public, offering visits, guest rooms and cultural events, while maintaining traces of its medieval and classical history.

The seigneury of the Bordes was linked to the bishops of Nevers, who had land and a mill in Urzy since the Carolingian era. The castle, with its hybrid architecture, illustrates the social and political transformations of the region, between episcopal power, local nobility and royal influence. Its decline in the 18th century and subsequent changes reflect the economic and cultural upheavals of Burgundy.

The wall paintings and decor of the living room, dating from the late seventeenth century, evoke the prestige of its owners, such as the Marquise of Bethune. These artistic elements, combined with the medieval defensive structure, make the Château des Bordes a rare example of the transition between the Middle Ages and the modern era in Nivernais.
