Origin and history
The Château des Charreaux, located in Hautefort, Dordogne (New Aquitaine), is a building built between the 17th and 18th centuries. It consists of a long body of rectangular building, framed to the north and south by two side pavilions surmounted by an additional floor. Its broken roof, initially covered with slates with scales, and its commons, testify to a neat architecture. At the southern end of the buildings remains a dovecote covered with an imperial roof, adorned with a campanile shaped like a sarrazin helmet, a rare and characteristic architectural element.
The chapel of the castle, now extinct, originally had a roof similar to that of the dovecote, but it would have been demolished in the early twentieth century. Among the protected elements are the facades, the roofs of the castle and the communes, as well as remarkable interior fireplaces, including those of the dining room, an old bedroom and a living room. These architectural details reflect the social status of the owners and the importance of the estate in modern times.
Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 11 July 1979, the Château des Charreaux preserves traces of its aristocratic past. The legal protections also concern the entrance gate and several interior chimneys, highlighting the heritage value of the building. Although some parts have undergone modifications or destruction (such as the chapel), the whole remains a significant testimony of civil architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries in Périgord.
