Origin and history

The castle of the Counts of Conflent-Cerdagne, located in Corneilla-de-Conflent in the Pyrénées-Orientales, is an 11th century building. Today it consists of remains of the original castle, a partial enclosure, a round tower probably added in the 12th century, and a Romanesque chapel dedicated to Saint Martin. This ensemble illustrates the medieval defensive and religious architecture of the region.

As early as 1047, the castle was mentioned as a Corneliani palace and served as a residence for the Counts of Conflent and Cerdagne. In that year, Count Raymond de Cerdagne judged the actions of his Viscount Bernard. The fortified enclosure, separating the castle from the church, date from this period, while the round tower would be a posterior addition. The site thus reflects the Comtal power and its judicial role in the Middle Ages.

In the 13th century, restoration works concerned the chapel, as evidenced by a commission from Nuno Sanche de Roussillon in 1216. However, the castle fell in disrepair from the 14th century: in 1351 the king of Aragon Peter IV gave it to the priory of Corneilla to establish a new monastery. The round tower, the only part classified, was listed as historic monuments in 1973, highlighting its heritage importance.

Today private property, the castle preserves traces of its comtal and religious past. Its history combines feudal power, medieval justice and architectural evolution, from its foundation in the 11th century to its transformation into a priory. The current remains offer a tangible testimony of this pivotal era in Occitanie.
