Origin and history

The Château des Faugs is a building of the last quarter of the 19th century, located in the commune of Boffers, in Ardèche, near Valencia. Built on the initiative of Vincent d'Indy, composer and music lover, it embodies a personal project: that of a home inspired by his attachment to the region, where he had spent part of his childhood at the nearby mansion of Chabret. Indy himself designed the plans, opting for a neo-Gothic style marked by a high dardian roof and ornamented skylights. The first stone was laid in 1883, and the castle was inhabited in 1890.

The castle, with an area of 600 m2, consists of a three-level rectangular house body (ground floor on the ground floor, one floor and attic). A chapel, contemporary of construction, is integrated. The ensemble reflects the aesthetic tastes of its sponsor, combining functionality and architectural symbolism. The estate also included a nearby farm, La Blachette, where the guards lived.

Ranked as a historical monument by decree of 8 March 1991, the Faugs Castle bears witness to the cultural influence of Vincentd Indy, a major figure in French music from the late 19th century. Its history is inseparable from that of the Ardèche, a region where it is a remarkable example of private heritage linked to an artistic personality. The sources also mention the supervisor Tracol, responsible for the realization of the plans designed by d-Indy.
