Vincent d'Indy - Composer and sponsor Designed and built the castle

Origin and history

The Château des Faugs is a private building initiated by Vincent d'Indy, a French composer known for his attachment to the region of Boffers. Having spent part of his childhood at the nearby mansion of Chabret, he decided to erect his own home there. The plans were drawn by him, and the first stone laid in 1883. The castle, of eclectic style with neo-Gothic influences, was completed in 1890, when Indy settled permanently. The property includes a chapel built during the initial works.

The estate was managed by guards staying at the nearby La Blachette farm. The castle was officially recognized for its heritage value in 1991, the date of its inscription in historical monuments. Today, it bears witness to both local history and the life of an artist marked by this territory, between music and architecture.

The building is distinguished by its 600 m2 rectangular house body, spread over three levels (intersoil, floor, attic). Its dardian roof, pierced with adorned skylights, and its integrated chapel reflect the aesthetic tastes of its sponsor. Although less well known than other ardèche castles, it illustrates the enthusiasm of 19th century elites for secondary residences in rural areas, combining modern comfort and medieval inspiration.
