Origin and history
The Château des Horts is a small 14th century castle located in the commune of Thiers in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It is part of a series of secondary residences built in the 16th century by local notables. The building is distinguished by its square structure, organised around a courtyard today covered with a glass roof, and flanked by four circular corner towers. Its northern facade, adorned with a crenelage and a scallop, reflects its original defensive character.
The monument, classified as a Historical Monument since 1976 for its facades and roofs, illustrates the civil architecture of the region. It bears witness to the influence of the Thurnese elites, who built secondary houses there in the 16th century, combining comfort and prestige symbols. Its present state, with a glass courtyard, suggests adaptations after its original function.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its role in local heritage. Although little documented about its precise occupants, the castle embodies the evolution of rural manor houses in Auvergne, between defensive utility and aristocratic residence. Its exact address, 11 Chemin des Horts, and its inscription under the title of Historic Monuments make it a protected and representative site of the history of Thiernois.
