Origin and history

Château des Lutz is a 19th-century building located in Daon, Mayenne department. This monument is distinguished by its bourgeois architecture, composed of two building bodies arranged in square, with a gallery terrace on the first floor. The estate, initially a fief of Cormeray, was successively expanded by private owners, reflecting the evolution of the aristocratic and bourgeois residences of the region.

The site was mentioned in 1457 as Bois des Luz in the national archives, then as Lutz farm on the map of Cassini. Abbé Angot states that the name is pronounced locally Leus, highlighting a phonetic evolution specific to the region. In the 19th century, the property passed into the hands of influential families: Romain Lemotheux, then Émile Martinet, who grew larger. At the end of the century, it belongs to Mrs. widow André Joubert, daughter of Émile Martinet, illustrating the heritage transmission typical of the era.

Although the castle is a 19th-century building, its history is linked to an ancient medieval fief, moving from Daon, suggesting a much older noble or seigneurial occupation on this site. However, the architectural traces visible today mainly date from the bourgeois period, marked by successive transformations to adapt the home to the lifestyles and social status of its owners. The castle is thus part of a double temporality: that of a feudal heritage and that of a modern architectural resurgence.

The chateau des Lutz is part of the landscape of the castles of the Pays de la Loire, a region where seigneurial and bourgeois residences were often remodelled in the 18th and 19th centuries. These transformations reflect the economic and social changes of post-revolutionary France, where the Earth's aristocracy gradually gives way to a rising bourgeoisie, anxious to mark its status with prestigious properties. Daon, like many rural communes of Mayenne, thus preserves the traces of this transition between the Ancient Regime and the contemporary era.
