Origin and history
Château des Vaux is a historic monument located in Champéon, in the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. Built between the 14th and 16th centuries, it presents itself as an elongated house framed by two returns, now partially in ruins. It originally consisted of a guard corps and a doorway, only part of which remained, including a stair tower and the frame of the entrance passage built into the north wall of the current building.
In the 16th century, the castle was already in ruins, but its remains still bear witness to its medieval architecture. Among the preserved elements, the chapel and the entrance gate were protected by a classification and inscription as historical monuments on 21 December 1984. These measures specifically concern the facades, the roofs of the house and the chapel, highlighting their heritage value.
The Château des Vaux illustrates the evolution of seigneurial constructions in Mayenne, between the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Although its structure has been degraded over the centuries, the preserved parts, such as the guard corps and the stairway tower, offer an overview of its initial organization. Today, the site belongs to a private company, and its access depends on the recovery or restoration initiatives undertaken by its owners.
