Origin and history
The château des Vergnes is a 17th century old gentilhommière built in Clermont-Ferrand, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This monument is characterized by a rectangular plan with two pavilions in return for square, as well as a smaller octagonal pavilion located to the west. The south-west facades, including the corner pavilions and the central span, are decorated with remarkable coronations, adding a picturesque appearance to the ensemble.
In the 18th century, the castle underwent substantial changes, partially transforming its initial appearance. These works reflect the architectural changes and tastes of the period, while maintaining the original structure. The building thus illustrates the adaptation of noble residences to new trends, between classicism and first influences of the Enlightenment.
The château des Vergnes is partly listed as historical monuments by order of 24 June 1976, specifically protecting its facades, roofs and octagonal pavilion. This official recognition underscores its heritage and architectural importance in the local landscape. After its rehabilitation, the castle was converted into a sociocultural centre by the city of Clermont-Ferrand, offering it a new vocation to serve the community.
The property, now belonging to the commune, bears witness to the social and urban history of Clermont-Ferrand. Its evolution, from an aristocratic residence to public facilities, reflects the changes in the city and its uses over the centuries. The protected elements, such as the coronations of the pavilions, recall the past prestige of this gentleman, while anchoring the monument in the present.
The location of the castle, rue du Château-des-Vergnes, makes it a landmark in the urban fabric of Clermont-Ferrand. Its exact address and its Insee code (63113) place it precisely in the department of Puy-de-Dôme, strengthening its territorial anchor. Available sources, such as the Mérimée or Monumentum base, confirm its status as an emblematic monument of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
