Facades and roofs; living room and large room on the ground floor with their decor (Box AM 66): inscription by order of 24 December 1982
Origin and history
The Château des Douaniers is a building located in Fresnes-sur-Escaut, in the Nord department, in the Hauts-de-France region. This monument, whose facades and roofs, as well as some interiors such as the living room and a large bedroom on the ground floor, were inscribed as historical monuments by decree of 24 December 1982, bears witness to a local architectural heritage marked by the industrial and mining history of the region.
Integrated into the Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining basin, the castle was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on June 30, 2012, recognizing its importance in a total of 353 mining-related sites. However, in 2019, it was identified as one of ten threatened sites among this heritage, highlighting the preservation challenges it faces.
Although the sources do not specify its exact origin or its first owners, its listing among historical monuments and its association with the mining basin suggest a link to the industrial boom of the 19th or 20th century. The castle, located at 80-82 rue Gambetta, remains a symbol of the local heritage, between worker memory and architectural heritage.
