Origin and history

The Château de Roset-Fluans, located in the Doubs department in Franche-Comté, has its origins since the 12th century. Mentioned as a medieval castel, it was destroyed by fires and wars before being declared "desert" in the 16th century. Its reconstruction began in the 17th century after its acquisition in 1681 by Gilles Rousseau, dit le Marseillais, whose family gave it its present form. The site also includes a mill established in 1584 on the island of the Froidière, destroyed and rebuilt in 1672, whose activity ceased around 1950.

In 1681 Jacques-Antoine de Belot, seigneur of Ollans and Villette, bought the seigneury of Roset from Frédéric de Chauvirey, marking a period of transformation for the estate. The castle, which was owned by noble families like Rousseau and Belot, reflects the architectural evolutions of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. It was finally listed as a historic monument in 2016, recognizing its heritage value.

The castle, with its fence walls, was fully protected by an order of 12 October 2016. Its history is marked by changes of influential owners, successive reconstructions and continuous adaptation to its environment. Today it bears witness to the aristocratic heritage and local dynamics of Franche-Comté throughout the centuries.
