Origin and history
The Château de Solerieux, located in the municipality of the same name in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is a historical monument dating back to the 12th century. The ancient texts first mention it in 1471, already in a state of ruin, a state confirmed by writings dated 1646-1648. Its abandonment seems to be linked to a reorganization of the village from the Renaissance, marking the end of its active use.
The site, occupied with certainty between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries, left little trace of its past. The current remains, protected by a registration order in 1989, are on the medieval site Saint-Raphaël. Despite its degraded state, the castle remains a testimony of the defensive architecture of this period, although its exact location is considered to be imprecise (level 5/10).
Today, the old castle of Solerieux does not seem open to the visit, and its current use (rent, guest rooms) is not documented. Available sources, such as Monumentum, highlight its historical importance without providing details about its potential occupants or sponsors. Its history reflects that of many of the region's strong castles, abandoned in favour of new urban dynamics from the Renaissance.
