Origin and history

The Château du Chalonge is a historical monument located in Trébédan, in the Côtes-d'Armor department in Brittany. Built in the second half of the 18th century, it is distinguished by its classical architecture and landscape integration, with a French garden and moat.

The buildings, including the house, the outbuildings, an orangery and a farm, were erected under the impulse of Louis-Pierre-Marie de Lorgeril, born in 1744. The works, begun around 1785, were not completed during the French Revolution. The site preserves remains of an earlier construction, including a dovecote and a chapel.

The castle is preceded by a large court of honor closed by a gate, while its southern facade overlooks a structured garden, typical of 18th century garden art. The ensemble has been partially listed as historical monuments since 20 December 1990, protecting the castle, chapel, dovecote, courtyard, garden and moat.

Located near Dinan and surrounded by woods, the castle of the Chalonge illustrates the architectural and landscape heritage of the Breton nobility of the end of the Old Regime. Its state of conservation and its inscription make it a remarkable testimony of this time.

Protected elements also include facades and roofs of outbuildings, excluding the farm. This monument reflects both the aesthetic ambitions of its sponsor and the historical upheavals that marked its construction.
