Origin and history

The Château du Deffend is a building built between 1860 and 1865 in Montravers, in the Deux-Sèvres department, according to the plans of the Parisian architect Delarue. This castle perfectly illustrates the architecture of the second half of the 19th century, with a complex plan and contrasting facades. The anterior façade, framed by two rectangular pavilions, and the posterior façade, decorated with two angle turrets, highlight a decorative game between brick and stone. Inside, the floor rooms, such as the lobby, living room, library and dining room, are fully panelled, with painted fireplaces and ceilings. The wooden staircase, of rotating style, adds to the elegance of the places.

The castle was owned by the Savary family of Beauregard, a notable lineage of the region. In 1988, the facades, the roofs and several interior rooms with their decorations were listed as historical monuments by order of 24 October. This classification underlines the heritage value of the castle, both for its exterior architecture and for the richness of its interiors, representative of the eclectic taste and craft techniques of the nineteenth century.

The castle of the Deffend is also distinguished by its croup slate roof and its cutting stone forebody, which reinforces its monumental character. Although the information on its current use (visits, rentals, accommodation) is not specified in the sources, its inscription in the historical heritage makes it an important testimony to local history and the evolution of architectural styles in New Aquitaine.
