Origin and history
The Château du Lieuteret, located in Darnets en Corrèze, is a historical monument built between the 15th century and the 2nd quarter of the 17th century. It consists of a rectangular house body, flanked by two wings forming a three-step perron. Originally, a body of central houses, framed by two pavilions, preceded the north facade, but only the pavilions now remain to the west, the communes having disappeared. A chapel is integrated into the east wing, while the west wing houses a dining room and a bedroom decorated with 17th century woodwork.
The present castle was built in the middle of the seventeenth century on the site of an older building, dated the 15th and 16th centuries. Interior design and decorations were completed in the 18th century, while roofs were modified in the 19th century. The ensemble, including facades, roofs, chapel and some interior rooms, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 2 June 1969.
The structure of the castle reflects a typical architecture of the seigneurial residences of the region, with a courtyard of arrival and a symmetric ordinance partially preserved. The 17th century woodwork, still visible in the dining room and adjacent room, testify to the refinement of the interior furnishings of the time. Subsequent changes, particularly in the 19th century, mainly concerned roofing, adapting the building to the needs and tastes of its successive occupants.
Although the sources do not specify the original owners or sponsors, the architectural evolution of the castle illustrates the stylistic transitions between the Renaissance and the classical era. Its inscription in 1969 underlines its heritage importance, both for its architecture and for its interior decorative elements, characteristic of the noble houses of the Limousin.
Practical information on access to the public, such as visits or services offered (room rental, guest rooms), is not mentioned in the available sources. However, the castle remains a major architectural testimony of the Corrèze, reflecting centuries of local and regional history.
The location of the castle, specified by GPS coordinates and postal address, is considered satisfactory (level 7 of 10), allowing a clear identification of the site in the commune of Darnets, attached to the department of Corrèze in Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
