Origin and history
The castle of Mesnil, located in Fontenay-Saint-Père in the Yvelines, is an emblematic monument of the 18th and 19th centuries. This castle, partially listed and classified as Historic Monuments, illustrates the architecture and interior decoration of these periods, thanks in particular to its 18th century woodwork still preserved on the ground floor.
The protection of the castle was formalized by two separate decrees: a general inscription by decree of 27 February 1947, with the exception of the parts already classified, and a specific classification of 18th century woodwork pieces by decree of 10 May 1948. These measures highlight the heritage value of the building, both for its structure and its decorative elements of the period.
Fontenay-Saint-Père, a commune of the Yvelines integrated into the Île-de-France region, reflects through this castle the evolution of aristocratic and bourgeois residences between the Enlightenment and industrial era. This type of monument often played a central role in the local social organization, serving as a place of power, representation or residence for the elites of the time.
Although the available sources do not specify the current use of the castle (visits, rentals, accommodation), its status as a Historic Monument makes it a privileged witness to the French architectural and decorative history. The GPS coordinates and the postal address indicated in the Merimée database allow it to be located with an accuracy deemed satisfactory, thus facilitating its identification in the regional heritage.
