Origin and history

The chateau du Plaix is a historical monument located in the commune of Saint-Hilaire-en-Lignières, in the department of Cher (region Centre-Val de Loire). This small fortified castle, dating mainly from the 15th century, was renovated in the 18th and 19th centuries, especially in its last quarter. Today it retains most of its original architectural features, typical of the late Middle Ages, and integrates into a typical bocager landscape of the Boischaut.

The Plaix toponym shares a common etymology with Plessis, designating a place protected by woven palisades or hedges, a common technique for fortifying sites at that time. The castle has been partially protected since 1995 with elements such as moat, facades, roofs, and a 16th century fireplace. Today it belongs to an association and remains rooted in local heritage.

According to available sources, the castle of the Plaix is one of several buildings bearing this name in the centre of France, especially in the nearby Allier. However, that of Saint-Hilaire-en-Lignières is distinguished by its registration in the inventory of Historic Monuments and its location in a preserved rural setting. The geographical data place it at the place called Le Plaix, with a location estimated as "a priori satisfactory" by the heritage bases.
