Origin and history

Château du Plessis-Mareil is a medieval building located in Saint-Viaud, in the Loire-Atlantique department. Built in the 14th century, it embodies the defensive and residential architecture of this period, typical of the castles of the Pays de la Loire region. Its history is marked by successions of influential owners, reflecting local social and political dynamics.

In the 17th century, the castle passed into the hands of the family of Carné, then was held by the family of the Bot de Talhouët on the eve of the French Revolution. These changes of property illustrate the changes of the nobility and local elites throughout the centuries. The monument has been partially protected since 1978, with the inscription of its escape (columbier) as historical monuments, highlighting its heritage importance.

The location of the castle, in a territory marked by agriculture and river trade, suggests a role both strategic and symbolic. In medieval times, castles such as Plessis-Mareil served as centres of power, protection for surrounding populations, and land management sites. Their presence structured the social and economic organization of the countryside.

Today, the castle of the Plessis-Mareil remains a testimony of this past, with preserved architectural elements and official recognition. Its listing in the historic monuments inventory in 1978 guarantees the conservation of this heritage, while providing an overview of local and regional history. Available sources, such as the Merimée or Monumentum base, confirm its anchoring in the cultural landscape of the Loire-Atlantique.
