Origin and history
The Château du Rieux, located in Saint-Bonnet-les-Tours-de-Merle en Corrèze, is an emblematic monument of the 15th and 16th centuries, although its current structure, covered with lauzes, dates mainly from the late 16th century. Originally, it formed a quadrilateral with a hexagonal tower crowned with mâchicoulis housing a screw staircase, as well as a corner turret on a lamp-end. A round tower, now low, completed the whole. Two bodies of buildings were later added to the main house, while a courtyard closed by a round road and a circular chapel, connected by a gallery with balustrades, testify to its architectural evolution.
The castle was also marked by a notable historical episode: it served as the last refuge for Marshal Ney in 1815, after Waterloo's defeat. This detail, combined with its defensive and residential features, makes it a strategic and symbolic site. A second tower, built at the beginning of the 20th century on the site of an old common oven, as well as a barn adjacent to the west facade, illustrate the subsequent adaptations of the estate.
Ranked a Historic Monument by decree of 17 April 1931, Château du Rieux embodies the architectural heritage of Limousin, combining medieval and Renaissance elements. Its mâchicoulis, scauguette and gallery reflect the ingenuity of the builders of the time, while its history, linked to figures like Ney, enriches its cultural heritage. The accuracy of its location remains moderate (level 6/10), but its official address, 5 Route du Rieux, facilitates access.
