Origin and history
The Château du Vigneau is a former wine estate located on the way to Laharie in Bayonne, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Originally dedicated to the production of wine, it was restored in 1848 after the damage suffered during the siege of Bayonne in 1814. The conflict, marked by violent fighting, had profoundly damaged the original home, requiring partial reconstruction.
In 1918, architect Gomez undertook a new transformation of the castle, adapting its use to that of a country house. This change reflects the architectural and social changes of the early 20th century, where wine-growing properties were often converted into secondary residences for wealthy families. The estate, with its gate and entrance gate, was listed for historical monuments in 2009.
Today, the Château du Vigneau is one of the 22 protected monuments of Bayonne, illustrating the architectural and historical heritage of the region. Its inscription bears witness to its importance in local history, mixing wine heritage, architectural transformations and memory of 19th century conflicts.
