Origin and history

The agricultural estate of Saint Rome was built between 1874 and 1893 by a Parisian aristocrat, reflecting the enthusiasm of the era for exotic and vernacular architecture. The castle, of neo-Renaissance style, is inspired by universal exhibitions, with decorative details borrowed from the eighteenth century Toulouse houses (cooked keys, antiquite faces). The neo-classical lateral wings are decorated with corinthian capital propylates, while the interior combines paintings, wallpapers and carved woodwork, including an 18th century ceiling reported.

The entire estate, organized around a central street, juxtaposes disparate decorative elements: Flemish belfry, Swiss houses, Turkish baths and Arab mosques, sacrificing functionality to aesthetics. This architectural pastiche, typical of the Second Empire, illustrates the taste of the elite for eclecticism and stylized historical references. The castle and its outbuildings (houses, facades, roofs) were classified as Historic Monument in 1990, thus preserving this unique testimony of 19th century architectural historicism.

The location of the estate, in the commune of Saint-Rome (Haute-Garonne), is documented with average accuracy (level 6/10). GPS coordinates and approximate address (8 Castle, 31290) confirm its anchoring in the Occitan rural landscape, where it is a remarkable example of fantasy architecture linked to the Parisian aristocracy of the time.
