Origin and history
Bertier Castle, also known as Château des Confluences, is located in Pinsaguel in Haute-Garonne, at the confluence of the Garonne and Ariège, about ten kilometers southwest of Toulouse. This strategic site, between two streams, probably motivated its construction in the Middle Ages, while providing a remarkable landscape still visible today.
The first foundations of the castle date back to the 13th and 14th centuries, when it belonged to the Bertier family, local lords of Pinsaguel. Originally conceived as a strong castle, it was profoundly redesigned in 1762 to adopt a neo-classical style, marking a transition between its medieval defensive role and a more residential and representative vocation, typical of the Enlightenment era.
Architecturally, the castle is structured around a courtyard bordered on three sides. The main house body, with two wings housing outbuildings, is connected by two raised pavilions. Its facade, decorated with brick pilasters and surmounted by a pediment, illustrates the classic 18th century influence. The wings, pierced with rounded windows, frame two floors, while the buildings of the farm, made of brick, extend harmoniously the whole. Inside, there are salons with false painted panellings, a vaulted room on a dogive cross, and a small chapel, testimonies of successive periods.
Ranked a historic monument since December 22, 1941, the castle and its farm were acquired by the town of Pinsaguel in 2011. A complete renovation was then undertaken to preserve this local heritage, to enhance it as an identity symbol of Pinsaguelois, and to make it a major cultural equipment, notably as the gateway to the Confluence Garonne-Ariège Regional Nature Reserve. This project is part of an effort to highlight the link between built heritage and the natural environment.
The location of the castle, between Garonne and Ariège, makes it a point of geographical and historical convergence. Close to Toulouse, he probably played a role in regional exchanges, while being a marker of Bertier's seigneurial influence. Today, its dual identity — both a medieval monument and a neo-classical residence — makes it a rare witness to the architectural and social evolution in Occitanie over more than five centuries.
