Origin and history
Château de Saint-Pal-de-Chalencon is a military building located in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built at the end of the 15th century, it forms with its enclosure a defensive ensemble commissioned by the bishop of Rodez. This monument illustrates the castral architecture of the late medieval period, marked by both military and residential concerns.
In the 17th century, the property of the castle was transferred to the family of Polignac, an influential noble lineage of the region. The building retains remarkable elements of its original construction, such as a 15th century fireplace in the kitchen. These details testify to its use both strategic and domestic throughout the centuries.
Listed as historical monuments by order of 24 November 1995, the Château de Saint-Pal-de-Chalencon represents a major architectural and historical heritage of the Haute-Loire. Its inscription underlines its importance in local history, between medieval heritage and subsequent transformations under the Old Regime.
