Origin and history
Noizay Castle was built in the early 16th century on a pre-existing feudal site. He played a key role in the 1560 Amboise Conjuration, serving as an arsenal and weapons depot in Castelnau, one of the leaders of the plot. The Duke of Nemours, having discovered the conspiracy, penetrated there with arquebusiers to capture Castelnau. The building, set on fire during these events, was rebuilt in the 17th century, incorporating Renaissance elements such as gabled windows and pinnacles.
The present architecture of the castle consists of a long building extended by two wings back to the north. The southern facade, more composite, could date from the Restoration, with a double revolution. Inside, a 17th-century wooden staircase with square balusters and straight flights bears witness to the craftsmanship of the period. The monument, partially protected since 1974, includes facades, roofs and this remarkable staircase, excluding a 19th century chapel.
The Castle of Noizay illustrates the architectural and political transformations of the Renaissance and the classical era in Touraine. Its history, linked to violent episodes such as the Amboise Conjuration, reflects the religious and noble tensions of 16th-century France. Today, there remains a significant example of the built heritage of the Centre-Val de Loire region, mixing medieval heritage and Renaissance influences.
