Origin and history

The castle of the Pierrière, located in Gardegan-et-Tourtirac (Gironde), is a historical monument built at the end of the 13th century to serve as a vantage point for the castle of Aiguilhe. Its original rectangular plan, typical of medieval fortresses, was partially preserved, although later modifications altered its original appearance. Some architectural elements of the 14th century still remain today, demonstrating its initial defensive role in the region.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle underwent major renovations to adapt to new residential and aesthetic requirements. Bays are pierced in the walls, and an additional building is erected, creating an inner courtyard characteristic of the seigneurial residences of the Renaissance. These transformations reflect the evolution of the castle, moving from a purely military function to a more comfortable place of life, while preserving traces of its medieval past.

The Château de la Pierrière is now protected under the Historical Monuments since a decree of 1 December 2015, covering its facades, roofs, commons, cellars, chapel, well and park. Owned by a private company, it illustrates the mixed architectural heritage (medieval and Renaissance) of the Gironde, although its access to the public and current uses (visits, rentals) are not specified in the available sources.
