Origin and history
Château Lafont, also known as Hotel Lassus-Nestier, is an 18th-century building located in the heart of Bagnères-de-Luchon, on the driveways of Etigny. Built in 1772 by Marc François Bertrand de Lassus-Nestier, it illustrates the civil architecture of this period. The building has been listed as historic monuments since 1927, and its staircase was classified in 1931 for its heritage value.
Since 1926, the castle houses the Museum of the Land of Luchon, created on the initiative of the Julien Sacaze Academy, a learned society founded in 1922. This institution aims to preserve the traditions and heritage of the Hautes Vallées du Comminges. The museum exhibits diverse collections reflecting local history, while serving as a seat for the Academy and its library.
The building also shares its premises with the tourist office, located on the ground floor. The wealth of the collections has led to their transfer to more suitable spaces. The Julien Sacaze Academy, one of the oldest in Occitanie, plays a key role in the development of this mountain heritage.
